A setlist for Jerry's concerts

A setlist for Jerry's concerts

Postby Dirk B. » Tue Jan 29, 2008 5:36 pm

If Jerry asked you to compile a setlist for his upcoming show (I know he wouldn’t, but let’s just imagine….), which songs would you choose?

Here ist my list:
1. Lewis Boogie (a perfect concert opener with a personal introduction: „My name is JLL and I’m from Lousiana….. As we know JLL used to begin his concerts with „Roll Over Beethoven“. But that one is so strongly associated with Chuck Berry, that I wouldn’t take it as a show opener…
2. End Of The Road (a song I always liked….)
3. Rock And Roll (why not include this one in his concerts – it’s one of the best numbers from „LMS“.)
4. You Win Again (a good rendition of the Hank Williams song and a chance to slow down a bit…)
5. Rockin’ My Life Away
6. I Am What I Am
7. What’s Made Milwaukee Famous
8. Little Queenie (In this case I like Jerry’s version even more than Chuck’s original)
9. Meat Man
10. Big Legged Woman
11. She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye
12. Chantilly Lace
13. What’d I Say
14. No Headstone On My Grave
15. Rock Around The Clock (as a surprise song – he played part of it in some 70’s concerts…)
16. Mean Woman Blues
17. Down The Line
18. Great Balls Of Fire
19. Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On
20. Breathless (In my opinion that’s his greatest song – even better than GBOF. I can’t understand why he hates it…

You’ll notice that this would be a longer show than the usual 45 minutes….

(1) Not enough country songs (if this is a setlist for the southern USA then there should be more country than rock, as he had far more big country hits!).

(2) He won't perform 'Meat Man' & 'Big Legged Woman' anymore as he finds them too vulgar.

(3) He would've struggled to finish a long concert with 'Breathless' 40 years ago, let alone now...

(4) Where's 'High School Confidential'? One of his biggest hits, & it always sounds great live.

(5) 'Mexicali Rose' & 'Mona Lisa' are a nice break from the 3 chord songs.

(6) Personally, the one thing I find a bit boring in recent years is that he only really performs rock & roll, traditional country, & blues. I used to like those songs that didn't really fit into these catagories: 'Sweet Georgia Brown', 'I'll Find It Where I Can', 'Country Memories', 'Who's Gonna Play This Old Piano', 'Folsom Prison Blues', etc.

(7) Why no gospel songs? These are Jerry's favourite kind of music (& 'The Old Rugged Cross' makes a great encore, as he proved in London in both 1972 & 1977).

(8) No 'Goosebumps', a song that should've been in Jerry's set since 1995! :D

(9) A "dream" show for me would include Jerry playing guitar (& Kenny playing fiddle), so I'd include 'Mystery Train'.

(10) Jerry shouldn't have written setlists...

Ooops, I forgot that song - but you're absolutely right. "Crazy arms" would be a great song for the setlist, too.

Well according to an interview that can be read at the starpage(you´ll have to find it yourself) he doesn´t like to perform High scool confidential.

That's because it's difficult for him to sing now. He certainly enjoyed it up until a few years ago.

I'd replace "Big Legged Woman" with "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" like he did at Gilley's for example. I love Kenny's guitar in this song live. Mayer

Dream set list

Postby Tony Papard » Fri Feb 01, 2008 4:18 pm

Lewis Boogie
High School Confidential
Crazy Arms
Big Legged Woman
I'm Looking Under a Skirt
Milkshake Mademoiselle
Billy Boy
I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You
Down The Line
Breathless
Green Green Grass of Home
No Headstone On My Grave
Rock and Roll
Hadacol Boogie
Another Place Another Time
There Must Be More To Love Than This

A Couple More Years
Big Blon' Baby
Wild One
In The Garden
Old Rugged Cross

Encore: Great Balls of Fire
Whole Lotta Shakin'
Medley: Tutti Frutti/Jailhouse Rock/Long Tall Sally/Hound Dog

That's a show of about 90 minutes, or longer if he did versions longer than about 3 minutes or talked a lot between numbers.

Of course it'd never ever happen, and I could think of loads of alternatives, but this is the kind of mixture between fast/slow songs I like
Long ago in Ferriday down in Louisiana, They all watched Jerry play and pump that old piana

I'd actually like to see Jerry start shows with this song! The Rolling Stones in recent years have usually started shows with one of their biggest hits ('Satisfaction', 'Jumping Jack Flash', 'Brown Sugar', etc), & it works well.

This is what we get today, and I love it and I´m thankful that he still performs. I am still hoping for a new European tour this year.

3. No Headstone On My Grave
4. You Belong To Me
5. Sweet Little Sixteen
6. Before The Night Is Over
7. Chantilly Lace
8. She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye

I think you've picked a good list back in february, he must have seen it  He just left out some songs to keep it under the 45 minutes.
My life will never be the same.
