Yes, they're very hard-working & loyal people.

And your point is?

This song is sexist, misogynist, patronising, racist, shit - probably the most politically incorrect recording of the 21st century.

Go on, Wolfie, try and convince me that it's supposed to be 'tongue in cheek'!

Andrew

No, it is more a fun song with silly lyrics. Status Quo have even some Asians in their entourage, and they take it with humour. Especially since none of the members comes even close to being a racist in real life and they usually apologize for the lyrics before playing the song.

The song has indeed quite a nice beat and it is one of the higlights of Status Quo's live show.

It is just meant as fun unlike the comments a certain Mr Lewis frequently makes.

And I am sure that there are songs, which are much more racist than this even if it was meant serious (which it is not!).

But if you take it seriously, the lyrics are inappropriate thinking of all the sex tourists going to Asia.

But I could almost guarantee it is not meant as a song for sex tourists, but more a compliment for the Asians.

I'd suggest a double-bill Japan Tour:

Jerry Lee Lewis "They bombed Pearl Harbor"
Status Quo "Gotta Be An Oriental"

Well, actually Status Quo will tour Asia next year...

And the song got only in the live by huge fan demand. All racists? I doubt it...

Take the song lighthearted, otherwise you are likely to puke when listening to it.

Here,s the lyrics so everyone knows what you are talking about

Her name was mia
From north korea
I said come over
Bring your land rover
I don't like sushi
She said that suits me
I take a shower
On every hour

Oh the oriental
Very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The oriental
Very very gentle
I got one for a cousin
Can you send me a dozen?

Her name was mae wong
She came from hong kong
She was a raver
Of eastern flavour
I said i love you
She said i'd love to
Go down to texas
Must have one lexus

Oh the oriental
So very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The oriental
Very very gentle
I like it spicy
That'll do me nicely

I'm gonna cross the water
Take a plane to tokyo
And find a little geisha
I love to see them go
And carry on to china, asia minor and some more
Then finish with a sling in singapore

Oh the oriental
Very very special
If you ever get some
You want another one and another one
The oriental
Very very gentle
I got one for a cousin
Can you send me a dozen?

Oh the oriental
Will drive you mental
I really gotta get one
And then another one and another one
Oh the oriental
Can you get them on a rental
Don't send me a russian
Ain't no discussion
Got to be an oriental

Well, Henry. What do you, as a Status Quo fan, think of the song?

Certainly the song can be seen as two-faced, just as this whole discussion. So I still think it fits in here perfectly.
