Knox Phillips Sessions 1973 and 1974 CD

Knox Phillips Sessions 1973 and 1974 CD

Postby PeterC » Fri Mar 07, 2014 12:43 pm

An interesting snippet from Paul MacPhail in the latest FBM:

The last session Roland (Janes) worked on at Phillips Studio this past summer was Jerry Lee sessions that Knox Phillips produced there on Jerry forty years ago in late November 1973. Jerry recorded dozens of demo songs like "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and many others. Knox is planning to now release this material on a forthcoming CD.

This news to me is far more exciting than any newly recorded material!

Fantastic news! I remember from earlier discussions years ago that Knox once mentioned he had enough good material to make it a double cd.

I know this to be true. Roland and I had a long talk about it. Knox had to wait until so many years passed before he could release this stuff. It was recorded in late 1973 and early 1974 while Jerry was still on Mercury. Some of the songs were later re-recorded for release on Mercury but there is still lots of new songs there, several of them are gospel..."Do Not Pass Me By" comes to mind.

I read that before on a website, but forgot to post it. Bad Bad Leroy Brown & Don't Pass Me By, is pretty like the Southern Roots session. I think a session of Meat Man is included too. But you all know that, i think, I also think that there were recorded in the Sun Studio, these 3 songs. The original or the new one called Phillips?

Hey Paul, was there any talk about of how Knox Phillips plans to release it? I already got a pain in my stomach thinking he will release them as mp3´s through itunes or something. It will mean sound only 5% of the studio tape masters & analog vinyl. A digital cd would at least give 25% of the sound. I fear the worst.

That's great news, I'm really interested in hearing his version of Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.

It has brass backing, similar to Southern Roots. Nice version.

There is a late 50s haircut photo of Jerry Lee with a young Knox & Jerry Phillips, Sam Phillips two sons, is this the same Knox Phillips?

This may be controversial, but I really don't think that Sam Phillips was much of a producer. His genius was in discovering and nurturing new talent.

Thought jack clement did the vast majority of producing the sessions at Sun

Hence why Sam was in vacation when jerry 1st turned up at sun

Bill justis preceded jack didnt he
