hello

Did anyone else see Chuck on this tour? Last time I saw him was Bobital 2006. He didn't change to much.

Altogether he was on stage for 50 minutes. He was in a good mood, looked great, and the audience was great, they just loved Chuck, no matter what he was doing. Chuck was surprised, at least acted like he was, when the entire crowd was singing almost every word of Sweet Little Sixteen, without any help.

Musically I had my doubts. The band sounded great, including Daniel from Norway on piano, wow, what a talented piano player! But, specially during the first part of the show, Chuck was musically speaking just bad. His voice was strong, but on the first 5 songs, he didn't play any solo, and after the intro he just kept hitting completely wrong chords. He made some comments on it as well, realized it, but didn't seem to be bothered by it. The first 5 songs orso, were also cut very short, all with very strange endings.

Halfway through the show, Chuck was musically getting better as well, so altogether I look back on a nice evening, with many jokes from Chuck, and a happy crowd, and some nice music, and some songs that almost made me run away as those wrong notes just sounded painful.

Compared to Jerry, I have to say, Chuck is far better in getting the audience on his hands, they just love him and he really knows how to make contact with everybody. Musically seen, the last Jerry shows I have seen were much much better, more polished, and, Jerry always does his best not to hit a wrong chord, and really tries to make everything sound as good as possible. From Chuck, you could sometimes hear that he still can do it, but, many times just isn't bothered to much, he just smiles to the audience, playing some completely wrong chords, and we were all still giving applauses....

I agree with all this, but another reason Chuck has the audience in his hands so easily (compared to Jerry) is that he more or less does a Greatest Hits show. If Jerry did all his best known SUN material like What'd I Say, Breathless, High School Confidential, Lovin' Up A Storm, It'll Be Me, Break Up, etc, then he'd go down better with casual fans (especially at those 'Legends' shows).

Heard a rumor that Chuck will be back in Holland in march 2008, just did some research and seems he's playing in A'dam on march 17th 2008 together with Bill Wyman.

If you check the complete tour schedule on Wolfgangs site, you'll be even more amazed. Something like 17 shows in a row! With just a few days off and lot's of traveling.

If anybody interested I can post some links to two professional reports as well.

I was at the helsinki gig. CB played 1 hr and was in great shape, especially his singing. Guitar playing was sometines sloppy or from
a slightly wrong key but so what, it did'nt matter. Great night.

Roll over, Beethoven!

Rollin’ over Beethoven is more like it, because here it is for the first time: Chuck Berry Johnny B. Goode: His Complete ’50s Chess Recordings. 103 tracks on 4CDs, from his first session on May 21, 1955, that yielded “Mabellene” (not a bad start) to a massive late July 1959 session that saw Chuck playing lead guitar for an artist other than himself: two tracks by a studio group called the Ecuadors, who were, reportedly, really the Moonglows (with Marvin Gaye) and Etta James.

In between are the cornerstones of rock ’n’ roll – “Memphis,” “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Carol,” “Little Queenie” and, of course, “Rock and Roll Music” – and a trove of rarities, alternate takes, and live and unreleased recordings that show the evolution of the artist, his songs and a genre.

Included is unreleased Take 3 of “Sweet Little Sixteen,” which is one of five versions that tells the story of its recording—from its demonstration record to two rejected (and intriguingly different) session takes to the original master to the sped-up master finally released by Chess. There are also unreleased alternate takes at different tempos than those released, some with different lyrics. And there’s a pair of previously unreleased 11 minutes-plus in-studio jams featuring Chuck with pianist Johnnie Johnson, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Jasper Thomas – a blues called “Long Slow Jam” and a rocker called, suitably, “Long Fast Jam” from 1958. Aside from the unreleased tracks there are live versions of “Maybellene” and “Roll Over Beethoven” from Alan Freed’s 1956 New York “Camel Rock ’n’ Roll Dance Party” album, plus all of the original masters overdubbed for the fake On Stage Chess album, and a number of recordings making their U.S. CD debut.

To paraphrase John Lennon, if they didn’t call it rock ’n’ roll, they’d call it Chuck Berry music. Come find out why.

After much research I found an internet adress where europeans can order the boxed set: It's on the page of Bear Family Records. They have a mailorder where they sell CD's from other labels:

I got both the JLL London Session (rightly raved about by Andrew) and the recent superb Bo Chess 2cd on Hip O Select via a new n used Amazon dealer based in Switzerland, also the JLL Time life 3cd, and all for much cheaper than any price I saw in the UK. US Amazon says they won't have the box until mid Jan and later in UK

Though I have most of the tracks on the old Charly Chuck box the sound on these HOS cds is stunning and the booklets are also cool

Phil

ps I'd rather have this box than pay a small fortune to see Chuck in a club, last time I saw him 9 minutes of the show went on a rambling My Dream poem and there was still Dingablydiling to come - - -
Mind you he did a brill show in Swansea back in 84 and it only cost £4
