It's an excellent book and author Coleman has won a few awards with it, particularly good on the sociological detail of how important cross over r&b stars like Fats were towards breaking down the racial barriers that eventually gave way with the early 60s legislature
I'm reading another excellent r&b book by James M Salem at the moment called The Late Great Johnny Ace (& the transition from R&B to RnR) first published in paperback in 2001 by University Of Illinois Press, just finished the Dewey Phillips book which I found so so,JLL hardly features in it, all about Elvis mainly
