Moon Mullican

There was no thread on the Moon Man, so I thought I'd start one...

I've heard alternately that Jerry Lee was (and wasn't) influenced by him, but the fact remains that his style was certainly a precusor to rock n' roll. Here's a couple of YouTube videos to kick things off.

"Cherokee Boogie" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gGfVMjgx88

"Seven Nights To Rock" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbJy9V4M ... re=related

"Honolulu Rock-A-Roll" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZPKjepo ... re=related

Here's a brief overview of Moon's career (one that mentions JLL liberally)...

Written by Patrick Wall. A great guy, but he's a Moon-obsessive & very much exaggerates his influence over JLL.

I remember looking at an early JLL forum (not Yahoo) several years ago online and saw Patrick Wall there. It did not seem very active. I remember reading some of his things on Moon, who I had never heard of before, and thought he must be a major influence on JLL from all the things that were said about him.

I'm a rollin' stone all alone and lost
For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway

For any Moon Mullican fans that are interested, there's a great 3 page article on him in the new issue of Now Dig This (No 406, January). It's by far the most detailed account of Mullican's career that I've read. Although I don't think the influence he had on Jerry is anything like that claimed by some writers (although his drinking and attitude to the law was similar!) he was a great artist in his own right. Fans of a certain age(like me) first came across his name in the mid 1960s in Breathless Dan's sale/auction lists. As was usually the case, anyone rated highly by Dan was worth listening to. Most of his best stuff is collected on 2 Ace cds ( "Seven Nights to Rock" and "Moonshine Jamboree") and the Bear family "Moon's Rock" cd. After reading the article, I pulled them off the shelves and played them. They are every bit as good as I remembered.
