A new CD has come out. It promises to contain "for the first time" the complete Toronto 69 concert. Didn't the Bear Family box already contain this???? The cover looks great, though.

They name 4 tracks and say "...and 10 more".

The Bear Family release has 14 tracks so I don't know how much more complete their version can be.

Also, the "Sunset Blvd" label doesn't sound like a seal of legitimacy to me.

I remember a bootleg LP of Chuck's performance that was on sale in the 1970s that contained 16 tracks (including 2 versions of Johnny B Goode and the encore of Maybelline). Bootlegs in those days were dodgy affairs and it's always possible a track from another concert had been added. I no longer have the album but perhaps someone else with a better memory can provide more details. The LP had the strikingly imaginative title of Chuck Berry in Toronto!

Amazon now also offers this CD - and they have a picture of the backcover featuring the songs. The album has a different running order than on the Bear Family release. There's aslo an introduction by Kim Fowley, but no unreleased tracks. Strangely, it seems to be the backcover of a vinyl double album (with four sides...):

P.S.: Are you sure there was a bootleg with 16 tracks from Toronto? Perhaps you mess this up with the Bellaphon/Magnum-Release -a double album with 13 tracks.

Dirk,
Yeah, there definitely was a bootleg and I bought it at a Record Fair from a dealer specialising in bootlegs. But the album was pretty shoddy and badly edited so some of the tracks might not have even been from Toronto. I do remember that there was a badly produced paper insert advertising other bootlegs. But despite the fact that it existed, I wouldn't regard the material as necessarily all coming from the Toronto concert so would not attach too much importance to it.

You can listen to some samples here. Surely the recordings got some aftertreatment...

Sounds real to me. On a good night and with a good band, Chuck was still a very capable performer in 2005-2006. Looking forward to hearing all of it! :D
